We Eliminate Obstacles!

Aiming to provide services to its students and all stakeholders at a certain standard and quality, Konya Chamber of Commerce (KTO) Karatay University carries out important studies to facilitate the lives of disabled students in particular with its student-friendly campus facilities.

In our country, the Barrier-Free University Flag Awards are organized by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Disabled Student Commission in order to increase the quality of higher education for disabled students, to identify the studies carried out to ensure full, effective and equal participation of disabled individuals within the boundaries of university campuses and to reward those who are found successful.

In this context, KTO Karatay University has been nominated for the Barrier-Free University Flag Awards in the category of “Accessibility in Space (Orange Flag)” with the studies it has carried out on its campus for disabled students.

The studies carried out by KTO Karatay University in this area are briefly as follows:
The campus area is closed to traffic and all buildings can be easily accessed through tactile surfaces and tactile floor plans. Guidance signs and signboards have been designed and positioned in a way that is suitable for disabled individuals. Next to the information signs, there is an information board written in Braille alphabet made according to TS 9111 standards. Care has been taken to ensure that there are no obstacles (such as trash cans, seating elements, trees, etc.) in front of the signs that block manual reading and vision.

Accessible disabled parking areas have been determined as 5% of the total parking space. Parking areas are located within an area of 50 meters from the building entrances. Parking areas are marked with accessibility symbols. There are walkways that provide access between building entrances and hop-on areas.

In public buildings, common staircase and landing widths are designed to be at least 150 cm in order to be suitable for the use of disabled stakeholders in the buildings. There is a landing every 8 to 10 steps to ensure ease of use on the stairs. In order to facilitate visibility and prevent slipping, non-slip tapes of 2.5 cm width and a perceptible color different from the color of the stairs have been applied to the ends of the steps.

In order to ensure that disabled individuals are carried up or down with wheelchairs, there are disabled elevators at the building entrances and entrances to the campus area. In areas where there is no disabled elevator, individuals with special needs can easily reach all areas with the help of ramps.

The interior dimensions of the elevators used inside the buildings are sufficient to allow wheelchair users to pass or maneuver, and access to all floors is provided.
